Join us for a screening of the documentary Coded: The Hidden Love of J.C. Leyendecker, which explores the life and art of influential early 20th-century illustrator J.C. Leyendecker. Known for his iconic advertisements and images, Leyendecker discreetly incorporated LGBTQ+ themes and imagery into his work during a time when this community faced widespread discrimination. The film examines how Leyendecker paved the way for modernized, inclusive advertising by embedding hidden messages of pride and acceptance in his illustrations, years before the gay rights movement. Following the screening, learn more about LGBTQ+ artists in CAM’s collection and the ways they incorporated their identity into their artworks.

This program is a partnership between Castellani Art Museum and Niagara Pride, with appreciation for Niagara Pride’s contributions.
